20-year-old Sunny Bajaj, who is from New Delhi, suffered a fractured finger, bruised back and a bloodied nose in the attack Friday night.
Bajaj said he was racially abused and punched by two men as he was getting into his car in Boronia area, The Age newspaper reported.
“They came up to me and asked me for money, I told them I had none and then they attacked me,” Bajaj, who is a student of Deakin University, said.
He said the attackers slammed the car door on his hand and punched him in the head and stomach. The attackers were in their 20s, one was white, while the other appeared to be of African descent, Bajaj added.
The police were investigating the incident.
The attack comes after a spate of attacks on Indian students in the city. At least 14 Indians have been attacked or mugged in Australia in the past month.
