Manmohan Singh Dhaka, Sep 6 (IANS) Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday paid tributes to those who died fighting for Bangladesh’s independence — from Pakistani rule.

Army bugles played the last post at the National Mausoleum here as Manmohan Singh stood in solemn silence and offered wreaths at the altar of the memorial.

Later, he signed the visitors’ book and planted a sapling of carambola, a fruit bearing tree.

Accompanying him to the site were Food Minister Abdur Razzak and Minister for Liberation War Affairs Tajul Islam.

The eastern wing of Pakistan became Bangladesh after a prolonged civil war that left millions dead and a short India-Pakistan war in December 1971.
