Indian kicked out of Canada for street racing death
April 30th, 2009 - 2:57 pm ICT by IANSVancouver, April 30 (IANS) Canada has kicked out an Indian immigrant convicted of killing a woman on the street during a car race with a fellow Indian here nine years ago.
The Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) Tuesday put Sukhvir Singh Khosa on a plane back to India for killing 51-year-old Irene Thorpe in a deadly car race with fellow Indian Bahadur Singh Bhalru in Vancouver in 2009.
The woman was out on an evening stroll when she was mowed down by Khosa’s car.
The young immigrants were driving at a speed of 120 km per hour in the 50-km speed zone when the accident happened.
In 2003, they convicted and jailed for two years. But they were allowed to spend this time under house arrest.
Since they had not yet acquired Canadian citizenship when the mishap happened, they were ordered to be deported by the Immigration and Refugee Board on completion of their sentence.
While Bahadur Singh Bhalru was deported in 2005, Khosa - who is father of two Canadian-born children - had challenged the board’s deportation order in the federal appeal court on humanitarian grounds.
The appeal court later directed the Immigration and Refugee Board to reconsider its deportation order against Khosa.
However, in its 7-1 ruling last month, the Canadian Supreme Court overturned the appeal court’s directive to the Immigration and Refugee Board to reconsider the deportation order.
The Supreme Court said there was “no basis” for the appeal court to ask the board to reconsider its deportation order. Khosa, who immigrated here from Punjab as a teenager, was deported Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency confirmed Wednesday.
