India, Sri Lanka discuss resettlement of Tamils
September 23rd, 2009 - 6:11 pm ICT by IANSNew York, Sept 23 (IANS) India has pressed for quicker rehabilitation and resettlement of some 300,000 Tamils displaced in Sri Lanka.
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna Tuesday met his Sri Lankan counterpart Rohitha Bogollagama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly here and discussed the resettlement of Tamil civilians displaced during the military rout of LTTE rebels by Lankan troops in May.
“The two ministers exchanged views on the situation in northern Sri Lanka, particularly the efforts of the Sri Lankan government in rehabilitating and resettling IDPs from camps to their original homes, as well as measures to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields,” India’s external affairs ministry said in a statement.
India agreed to assist Sri Lanka in the rehabilitation of the Tamils, most of who fled areas controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before the rebels were routed in May.
After the war against the rebels ended, Sri Lanka had assured India that it was hopeful of completing the process of rehabilitation of Tamil civilians within six months.
Colombo has also assured New Delhi that it was committed to finding a political solution to address aspirations of the Tamil minority through devolution of powers.
