India, Germany to speed up efforts for UNSC membership
October 2nd, 2010 - 10:09 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) India and Germany will collectively speed up efforts for reforms and expansion of the United Nations Security Council, in a bid to make it responsive to the changed geo-political realities.
“We are supporting each other for the permanent membership and will speed up efforts for the Security Council’s expansion,” German Ambassador to India Thomas Matussek told IANS.
He said India and Germany along with Brazil and Japan should be the permanent members of the UNSC.
Matussek, who earlier headed Germany’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York, said the UN was losing its relevance because it did not reflect the realities of the 21st century.
“The current structure of the UNSC does not reflect the realities. You can’t discuss global issues keeping countries like India, Germany and Japan out,” he said, adding a comprehensive reform was needed to make the United Nations effective in dealing with the major global issues.
Foreign ministers of India, Germany, Brazil, and Japan (collectively known as G4 nations) met last week to press for their demand of inclusion in the UNSC.
“India and Germany are the founding members of G4. We believe that the Security Council does not reflect the geo-political realities of the 21st century. Germany, India, Brazil and Japan should have a permanent seat and we are trying to get it,” Matussek added.
