Washington, March 23 (IANS) Every 26 seconds, a student leaves school in the US, official figures show.
This startling revelation came as US President Barack Obama announced during a visit to South America the launch of a programme to increase the number of Latin American students in the US.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan has described the dropout of 25 percent among students as “unacceptable”, but acknowledged the fact that many schools do not offer “first-class education” to students.
The dropout rate rises to nearly 40 percent among African-Americans and Hispanics, according to Prensa Latina.
Seeking to combat this high dropout rate, education experts have now launched the “26 seconds” campaign, which allows young people to express their creative talent in music, sports and other fields on the site 26seconds.com.
