In UK, foreign criminals awaiting deportation have plasma TVs, Nintendo games
February 4th, 2008 - 3:06 pm ICT by adminLondon, Feb.4 (ANI): In a development that could send shivers down the spines of most Britons, a new report has revealed that at least three criminals are freed from jail every hour to ease overcrowding in the country’s prisons. A row has also broken out over dangerous foreign criminals, including killers and rapists, reportedly enjoying a host of lavish perks while they await deportation.
According to The Sun, their taxpayer-funded comforts include giant plasma television sets, nintendo Wii game consoles; a music room with expensive gear and cash rewards for playing football.
The tabloid also reveals that detainees can even buy goods at a store inside the centre and have them hand-delivered to their cells by prison staff.
Mark Wallace, of the Taxpayers Alliance, said: Its a disgrace. Taxpayers are funding a lavish lifestyle for people who should not even be in this country.
Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green said: Detention centres should be civilised and humane, but not luxurious.
One senior official told The Sun: There are plasma TVs in some cells and 48in ones in the communal areas.
Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said last night: We are always under pressure from HM Government inspectors to provide improved constructive activities.” (ANI)
