Images of George Mallory’s Everest climbing attempt in 1922 to be displayed
September 20th, 2009 - 1:47 pm ICT by ANILondon, Sep 20 (ANI): Photographs of British mountaineer George Mallory’s first serious attempt to climb Everest in 1922 have been discovered, and will be put on display for the first time in nearly eight decades.
Vivid images and footage of the 10-day expedition, which ended 2,000 feet from the summit when an avalanche killed seven support staff, were unearthed in the archive of the Royal Geographic Society (RGS), The Times Online reports.
Mallory survived the 1922 expedition and came closer to the summit two years later, but disappeared on Everest’s northeast ridge. His body was discovered in 1999.
The expedition images captured by John Noel also include the first footage of Tibet.
The expedition, which was led by British Army officer Charles Bruce, comprised of a team of 150 Sherpas and porters.
“The film and photos show not just the attempt to climb Everest, but also the recruitment of Sherpas in Darjeeling and meeting the lamas who gave permission for the assault on the mountain,” said Felix Driver, professor of human geography at Royal Holloway, London University.
Driver has sieved through two million items in the RGS archive for the Hidden Histories of Exploration exhibition, which opens at the society’s base in Kensington on October 15. (ANI)
