According to a government study, the trend has been evident in the last two years.

From 2006 to 2008, the Malays led in illegitimate births followed by the Chinese and Indians.

In 2009 and 2010, more Indian babies were born out of wedlock compared to the Chinese, said the study by the National Registration Department.

Ethnic Indians number 2.1 million. A bulk of them are Tamils. Other significant groups are from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. There are also some 100,000 Sikhs and Punjabis.
