Illegitimate births rise among Malay Indians
March 21st, 2011 - 3:46 pm ICT by IANSKuala Lumpur, March 21 (IANS) Illegitimate births are on the rise among ethnic Indians in Malaysia.
Although Indians form only eight percent of the 28 million population, there have been more illegitimate births among them than the Chinese whose numbers are roughly three times more.
According to a government study, the trend has been evident in the last two years.
From 2006 to 2008, the Malays led in illegitimate births followed by the Chinese and Indians.
In 2009 and 2010, more Indian babies were born out of wedlock compared to the Chinese, said the study by the National Registration Department.
Ethnic Indians number 2.1 million. A bulk of them are Tamils. Other significant groups are from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. There are also some 100,000 Sikhs and Punjabis.
