Icy roads lead to car crashes in Chinese province
January 7th, 2011 - 10:41 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 7 (IANS) Ice accumulating on highways led to three serious car accidents and a 10-car pile-up Friday in China’s Guizhou province.Five people died and seven were injured, Xinhua reported.
The 10-car pile-up and two rollover accidents together killed five people and injured seven, said a spokesman with the public security department.
A cold snap since New Year’s Day has left many parts of Guizhou covered in ice.
Though most expressways have been reopened to traffic, police have warned it is still risky to drive on the icy roads.
More than 840 traffic police officers have been deployed on the highways Friday to keep traffic moving.
The transport department has spread salt and sand to de-ice the roads and prevent cars from skidding.
