Hookers for Jesus: Vegas Prostitutes Reformed

Nightline’s March 12 broadcast of the “Faith Matters” was a very sensitive and respectful look at a group of Las Vegas prostitutes who have turned to religion and are trying to help other prostitutes from the streets of Las Vegas.

Prostitute Annie Lobert had hit her worst with a cocaine addiction and had chosen to leave the profession when, as she said, God changed her life. She started the group Hookers for Jesus shortly afterwards. ABC reporter Neal Karlinsky told her story and that of other prostitutes who gave up their professions similarly and joined the church of Pastor Benny Perez following Lobert’s ministry. Neal said, “Along with a pair of volunteers from a nearby church, [the women are] on the streets looking for prostitutes with one goal in mind: to save them. We keep our cameras at a distance as they hand out gift bags filled with bibles.” Talking about his interview with Annie Lobert, Neal said, “Annie Lobert isn’t exactly your average missionary. Before she was a so called ‘hooker for Jesus,’ Lobert was to put delicately, a hooker. Starting as a teenager, she sold her body through escort services, websites and on the streets of Las Vegas for 11 years.”

But leaving the profession was not easy for these women. Lobert said, “I know what it’s like to be where they are. I know what it’s like to be with a pimp and not being able to come home because you don’t have enough money… Sex for sale is an addiction.”

Another recently reformed prostitute, who went by the name “Tammy” even spoke of how her pimp had broken her jaw. The financial decline also makes if difficult for some prostitutes to turn their lives over. “To help,” Karlinsky said, “Pastor Perez and his church have donated this house as a first stop for prostitutes trying to escape their old lives.”
