Hong Kong couple jailed for beating 4-year-old daughter
August 26th, 2009 - 12:13 pm ICT by IANSHong Kong, Aug 26 (DPA) A couple beat their daughter so severely she needed skin grafts on her bottom and was left scarred, a court report said Wednesday.
Plumber Lee Chiu-ming, 47, and Yip Shuk-fun appeared in court Tuesday for beating their four-year-old daughter with plastic brushes and a wooden rod as punishment for incontinence.
The beating, in February this year, was so severe the girl was admitted to hospital where doctors said she would have died had she been admitted a day later.
She was also found to be suffering from anaemia and malnutrition, the Hong Kong Standard reported.
“It’s the worst injuries I have seen on a child’s bottom. I can’t imagine how her natural parents could treat her this way,” sentencing Deputy Magistrate Raymond Wong said.
Lee admitted causing bodily harm and causing unnecessary injury to his daughter and was jailed for two years and three months.
Yip pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary injury to her daughter and was jailed for two years, plus another four months for breach of a previous drug probation order.
The court heard the child had been in foster care for the first two years of her life but was then put in the care of her parents after assessments by the Social Welfare Department.
