Home-grown Brits behind two-thirds of Islam- related terror in UK: Report
July 5th, 2010 - 1:32 pm ICT by ANILondon, July 5(ANI): A new report has found that two-thirds of Islamism-related terrorism offences in the UK over the past decade involved home grown terrorists with links to Al-Qaeda.
According to the Centre for Social Cohesion report, British citizens carried out 69 percent of such incidents between 1999 and 2009.
The report also found that individuals living in London committed some 48 percent of the 127 Islamism-related terrorism offences or suicide attacks.
The next two most common regions were the West Midlands (13 percent) and Yorkshire and Humber (nine percent).
“Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda-inspired terrorism remains the biggest threat to the UK’s national security,” Sky News quoted the report, as saying.
“The Security Service estimates that over 2,000 people in the UK pose a terrorist threat and in March 2005 it was estimated that there were up to 200 Al Qaeda-trained operatives in the UK,” it added. (ANI)
