Hindus urge Western Australia Legislative Council to rotate prayer among religions (Corrected)
June 19th, 2010 - 11:09 am ICT by ANINevada (US), June 19 (ANI): Hindus have urged Legislative Council of Western Australia to rotate the opening prayers among different religions and denominations.
Currently, President of the Council reads same two-part prayer every sitting day. One part of the prayer is “Lord’s Prayer”, a well-known prayer in Christianity, while the other part besides other things, seeks the advancement of “the honour of Her Majesty”.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that in view of increasing diversity of Western Australia, it would be a step in the right direction to open the Council with prayers from various religions/denominations.
In our shared pursuit of the truth in our increasingly pluralistic societies, we can learn from each other. Dialogue will bring us reciprocal enrichment and we shall be spiritually richer than before the contact, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, adds.
Rajan Zed’s request for the President to read at one session the Hindu prayer supplied by him in addition to the prayer the President reads each day was also not accepted.
Meanwhile, Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening has stated that Western Australia Legislative Council, being a representative body for all its citizens irrespective of their numbers or religion, should open up for prayers of different religions and denominations.
First created in 1832, the Legislative Council is the upper House of the Parliament of Western Australia, largest state of Australia, and comprises 36 members. Barry House is Council President. Western Australia is known for its wonderful beaches, sunshine and landscape. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. (ANI)
