Hindus laud Australia Catholic Church for abstinence from meat on Ember Days
August 27th, 2010 - 5:22 pm ICT by ANINevada (US), Aug 27 (ANI): Hindus have applauded Catholic Church in Australia for recommendation of abstaining from meat on Ember Days, which are observed on first Fridays of autumn and spring.
September three is designated as Spring Ember Day for the Catholic Church in Australia. Ember Days also focus on environment and climate control.
Noted Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged other religions and denominations also to come out in support of vegetarianism, thus contributing to a healthier world and helping the environment.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that Hinduism promoted strict vegetarianism insisting on ahimsa (not harming living creatures) and non-killing, and renouncing animal slaughter and meat eating. It suggested taking of sattvik (vegetables, fruits, etc.) and avoiding rajasik (eggs, etc.) and tamasik (meat, intoxicants, etc.) foods.
Rajan Zed urged all world religious leaders, religions and denominations to openly bless the environmental causes. Faiths coming out in support of the environment would be a remarkable signal, he added. Zed pointed out that ancient Hindu scriptures, especially Atharva-Veda, were highly respectful of mother nature. (ANI)
