Hindu leaders claim victory as ‘The Love Guru’ faltersJuly 31st, 2008 - 12:42 am ICT by IANS
New York, July 30 (IANS) Hindu leaders have claimed victory in their campaign against Mike Myers’ new film “The Love Guru” after the movie failed to wow audiences across America. Religious leaders had spoken against the movie, calling it morally offensive to Hinduism, and had urged the people to boycott it, reports Contactmusic.com
Leading US Hindu scholar Rajan Zed is convinced that the boycott contributed to the movie’s box office slump.
“The boycott call of Hindus against ‘The Love Guru’ for lampooning Hinduism has been very effective, contributing to its failure at the box office. Many Hindus as well as non-Hindus have shunned the movie in the US and Canada,” Zed said.
“The Love Guru” debuted at number four at the US box office upon its June 20 release taking just $14 million in its opening weekend, and managed to earn a gross total of just $31 million in the five weeks since then.
