Hindu devotee dies in Bangladesh temple clash
September 20th, 2009 - 12:39 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, Sep 20 (IANS) Over 200 followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) have been arrested in Bangladesh following the death of a Hindu devotee in a dispute over a temple, a media report said Sunday.
A clash took place Friday at Bhatgaon village in Thakurgaon district in north-western Bangladesh, more than 450 km from here, in which 16 people were injured, including a devotee Phulbabu, who later died.
Those arrested include the chief of Gorea Iskcon temple, Pushpa Shila Sham Das, The Daily Star reported.
A resident of Bhatgaon village, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, filed a police case Friday night, accusing 62 identified and about 150 unidentified Iskcon followers over the killing of Phulbabu.
Following the clash, police ousted the followers of both sects from the temple and took control of it.
Iskcon is a worldwide body established in 1966 and is popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement.
The incident occurred as Hindus across the world began the Navaratri celebrations.
