Hillary Clinton to get $5,000 less salary than Rice

Washington, Dec 12 (Xinhua) The US Congress has voted to cut the secretary of state’s salary back to its pre-2007 level, paving the way for Hillary Clinton to fill that post, CNN reported Thursday. The move was meant to conform to a clause in the constitution stipulating a member of congress cannot be appointed to a government job if the position’s salary has increased during the lawmaker’s current term.

The former first lady was a sitting senator when President George W. Bush authorised a pay raise of $5,000 for the secretary of state last January.

Though Hillary will miss the pay rise, she will still make about $10,000 more a yaer being the secretary of state than what she is currently drawing as a senator.

A similar move was made in 1993 when then president Bill Clinton picked then senator Lloyd Bentsen as treasury secretary.
