High school principal in Ohio bans dirty dancing
February 20th, 2009 - 4:52 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb 20 (ANI): A public high school principal in Ohio has implemented a no dirty dancing rule, and asked students to sign an agreement that they will not grind.
The grind is, according to Michael Mayell, principal of Brunswick High School in Madina County, Ohio, a dance style that simulates sex on the dance floor.
Mayell has forced students attending the school’’s winter formal on February 21, to sign a pledge to follow 10 provisions, and among the provisions, which include a dress code, is the ban forbidding the dance.
They”re grinding. They”re rubbing. It’’s just inappropriate, and we”re not going to tolerate that, the Sun quoted him as telling Fox News.
He further revealed that the policy had been existing for some time, but school officials never enforced it.
He said that any student found violating the agreement would be made to leave the dance.
We”re going to change the enforcement. Any student who is doing that will be removed from the dance immediately, he stated.
Mayell also said that his decision had been met with approval from the community, with school officials and parents throughout the state emailing and calling him to express their support.
The ban has, however, slowed down ticket sales, with many students encouraging their peers not to attend the formal, but Mayell is not bothered by it or if it infringes on a student’’s freedom of expression.
They can do that freedom of speech somewhere else. This is not the forum for it, he added. (ANI)
