Henri Paul was warned not to drive Di and DodiDecember 4th, 2007 - 1:16 pm ICT by admin
London, Dec 4 (ANI): Henri Paul was warned not to get behind the wheel of Princess Diana, and Dodi Al Fayeds car that crashed in Paris ten years ago, the ongoing inquest into their deaths has heard.
Francois Tendil, night security manager at Pariss Ritz Hotel, revealed that he had told Paul, the acting head of security at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, before leaving the hotel that it was not his job to drive the couple.
Tendil shed light on how an unfortunate plan was devised to dodge the paparazzi by driving the couple from the back of the hotel, while Dodis usual driver, Philippe Dorneau, remained at the front as a decoy.
He revealed that Dodi had been tremendously angry at the activities of the paparazzi, who had followed him and Diana since their arrival in Paris.
He also revealed that Dodi, Paul and two bodyguards - Trevor Rees and Kes Wingfield - had decided on the last-minute plan, but it was Dodi who played a key role in the plan.
“Due to the situation and what Dodi could see in front of the hotel, he decided at the last minute that Henri Paul could drive the car,” The Sun quoted Tendil, as saying.
“And the bodyguards did agree. Everybody agreed that, I would like to record that, he added.
He said that he had challenged the decision when he discovered the plan.
“My reaction was that it was not his duty to do so because we had drivers in the hotel,” he said.
Tendil added that he saw no signs that Paul, had been boozing, although blood tests after the crash showed Paul was over the drink-drive limit.
The witness said Paul seemed excited but there was nothing to suggest he was drunk.
I wouldnt say that was unusual because when you have that type of event to cope with you are all very excited. Otherwise it wasnt his temper to be like that, he said.
He also told the court that he had no idea where Paul went after he knocked off work. And when he phoned him, he heard no background noise that might have given a clue.
The jury also heard from Dorneau, who said it was the first time in his experience that Dodi had been pursued by the paparazzi.
The driver said he believed the crash would not have happened had it not been for the paparazzis presence. (ANI)
