Helicopter carrying six Israeli service members crashes in central Romania

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA (BNO NEWS) — A military helicopter belonging to the Israeli Army crashed on Monday afternoon in central Romania, local media reported. At least six Israeli soldiers and one Romanian soldier are feared dead.

The Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter lost radio contact with the control center and crashed at around 3:20 p.m. local time near the town of Fundata, according to military sources quoted by Mediafax.

The Romania’s Ministry of Defense said that around 5.45 p.m. local time air search-and-rescue team found the missing helicopter wreckage near the communes of Fundata and Zarnesti in Brasov County, central Romania.

The cause of the accident and fate of the aircraft’s crew is currently unknown. Romania and Israel are conducting a joint air drill called Blue Sky 2010.
