Islamabad, Nov 22 (IANS) Hussain Haqqani, the Pakistan ambassador to the US, Tuesday submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the wake of “Memogate” scandal, Dawn reported.
The resignation came over an allegation by Pakistani American businessman Mansoor Ijaz stating that Haqqani had asked for assistance in getting a message from Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to the then top US military commander, Admirral Mike Mullen.
Ijaz has alleged that Zardari feared a military takeover following the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan May 2 and thus sought Mullen’s help in averting this.
Haqqani attended a high-level meeting with the Pakistani civilian and military leadership in Islamabad Tuesday, following which submitted his resignation to Gilani.
He later posted on his Twitter account: “I have requested PM Gilani to accept my resignation as Pakistani Ambassador to US.”
“I have much to contribute to building a new Pakistan free of bigotry and intolerance. Will focus energies on that,” the post further added.
Haqqani had been Pakistan’s ambassador to the US since 2008.
