hanukkah_homeDec 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) For all those waiting for the biggest Jewish festival of the year, the time is now to put on your yarmulke and join in the festivities. The Hanukkah 2010 kicked off on Wednesday after sundown and Jews all over the world can be seen lighting up their homes with the candles celebrating the re-dedication of the temple at Jerusalem.

Some of the well known Jewish experts spoke about the significance of the Hanukkah this year. Rabbi Brad Hirschfield said that it was a special Hanukkah 5711 on the Jewish calendar and it also marked the final year of decade. He said that while Americans were celebrating the festival they should also look back at the events that led them to a economic condition resembling the Great Depression. He also spoke about the ongoing issues between Israel and Palestine.

The Latke, which is one of the most common dishes during the Hanukkah festivities, has also been a big buzz this year. Jim Shahin said that as Hanukkah was nearing, he thought of doing something new with the traditional recipe. He explained that this year he talked to his Arab-American friend and thought of barbecuing the potato pancakes. Latke is a potato pancake that is fried in oil and served with sour cream and apple sauce. It graces the dining table of the Jews at one point or the other during the 8-day festival of lights.

Jewish families all over the world get together to celebrate the ancient ritual of Hanukkah where they light up candles in their homes. Each day of the festival, a new light, called the Shamash is added to the lighting.
