Half brained miracle boy can talk and walk normally after surgery
August 16th, 2010 - 2:57 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 16 (ANI): In what could be called a miracle, a boy who underwent a drastic surgery to treat a disease similar to meningitis and left with only half brain can run and talk properly after recovery.
Lewis Bull’s parents cannot believe that their son is still alive.
Doctors warned 12-year-old Lewis’ parents that he might be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
They had also said that said that if the surgery failed to work properly, he could be stuck with the mental age of 12.
Lewis was suffering from the rare condition Rasmussen’s encephalitis, and scans revealed the disease-damaged right side of his brain was threatening to limit the growth of the rest of his brain.
Surgeons felt that the best cure to this problem would be to Lewis’ brain in half. By disconnecting the swollen right side, they hoped the healthy left side would grow to compensate and take over key functions.
Miraculously Lewis pulled back from the edge after surgery and surprised doctors by walking and talking in a matter of weeks.
“He’s doing fantastically well. He never complained or asked, ‘Why me?’ - he just got on with it. He takes life in his stride,” The Sun quoted mother Mandie as saying. (ANI)
