Panaji, Feb 17 (IANS) A state forest department employee has been arrested for the rape of a British national more than a year ago.
The accused, Lawrence Dias, 26, a resident of Merces, who was arrested on Monday night, had allegedly raped a 32-year-old British woman Jan 11 last year, officials said. Dias is employed in the animal rescue division of the forest department and is posted in Panaji.
“The victim was returning from a classical music concert and Dias had offered her a lift. He took her to a nearby thicket surrounding a spring where he raped her,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares told reporters, adding that Dias had confessed to the crime.
Forensic examination had also confirmed rape.
“We have already attached the motorcycle which was used in the crime,” he said. The police are now in the process of conducting an identification parade for which the victim is expected to be present.
“She is in Goa at the moment. We have asked her to be present for the identification parade, which will take place this week,” Tavares said.
