Golfer Norman caught for talking on mobile while drivingJuly 17th, 2008 - 9:22 pm ICT by IANS
Southport (Britain), July 17 (IANS) Greg Norman, the multi-millionaire Australian golfer, escaped a fine after being caught by police while talking on the mobile phone to his wife, Chris Evert, the former tennis legend, whom he married three weeks ago in the Bahamas. Norman, winner of two British Open titles in 1986 and 1993, was caught while driving a Range Rover on his way to practise for the British Open at Royal Birkdale here.
The 53-year-old Australian, however, walked out of trouble of paying a fine of 60 pounds but was given a stern warning.
“I told the officer two things. First, that I did not realise it was an offence to use a cell phone while driving, and second that I had only been on it for 30 seconds to take a quick message from my wife,” Norman was quoted as saying by the Daily Express here Thursday.
“He (officer) gave me a caution but there was no fine or anything like that. Effectively, I was slapped on the wrist and told not to do it again.”
Winner of 78 titles worldwide in a glittering career, Norman is now involved in various businesses ranging from wines, designing golf courses and he combines that with playing on various Tours, too. Recently he married Chris Evert after a messy divorce from his first wife.
Britain is currently working on plans to introduce jail terms for those caught driving dangerously while talking or messaging on mobile.
The new guidelines say drivers who kill on the roads while texting or talking on mobiles could face up to 14 years in prison. Motorists will also be prosecuted for using a hands-free phone if they are not in control of their vehicle.
