Johannesburg, Feb 17 (IANS) South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs said that he was not surprised at his omission but was disappointed at missing out from national squad for the upcoming Bangladesh tour. The 33-year-old batsman, who is going through a rough patch since 12 months, said that the selectors would have added salt to his wound if they had included him in the same side for next month’s tour to India. He has averaged mere 22.40 from six Tests outing in the last 12 months.

“It was a bit disappointing when I found out I had been left out of the touring party but I was sort of expecting it. I am looking at it on the bright side and think that missing two Tests in Bangladesh is not the worst thing to have happened to me,” Gibbs wrote in his latest diary on his official website.

“It’s a strange feeling being at home playing domestic cricket while the boys are touring, but I am staying positive and know I can bounce back.

“It would be disappointing if the selectors are looking to take the same Test squad on to India next month as I was looking forward to that trip, but again, I cannot afford to get too down about these things as they are out of my control,” he added.

He further said that in such a torrid time of his career, none of his colleagues or Cricket South Africa is extending helping hand towards him.

“Nobody has been in touch with me about what I have to do to get back or to offer their support but that doesn’t bother me. I am concentrating on playing domestic cricket now,” he wrote.

He also evaded from making any comments on the controversy leading to the selection of the squad for the upcoming tour that starts with the first Test Feb 22.

“I don’t want to spend much time talking about that as it’s between other people but I would say that I would never have wanted to have been picked because of my race, just making the numbers up. What will be will be and all I can do is score runs and try to persuade them to pick me again in the future,” Gibbs said.
