London, Oct 7 (ANI): A giant pumpkin in Britain, which is said to weigh more than a Fiat 500 and has already smashed two records this weekend, is making a bid for the world title.

The pumpkin, in Lymington, Hampshire, which weighs 1,652lbs and has a 17ft waist, has for the last six weeks been putting on a colossal two stone in weight each day.

It has already smashed the British and European records, and after an official weigh-off on October 2 the Atlantic Giant may become the heaviest pumpkin of all time.

Twin brothers Ian and Stuart Paton, 49, have been growing giant pumpkins at Pine Tops Nursery for 30 years.

“We want the world record and we’re going to get it. This may be our lucky year as one of our six pumpkins looks like it’s going to tip the scales at 1,652lbs,” the Daily Mail quoted Ian as saying.

“The current world record weight is 1,725lbs, so if this difference falls in our favour we’ll have a new world record.

“And if we don’t get it this year we will get it in the future. Our pumpkins keep getting bigger each year.

“This is down to us learning more about how to grow them combined with their improved genetics, we cross breed the plants with the largest fruits to make the next generation of pumpkins even bigger,” he stated.

The current British record, also set by the brothers in 2008, stands at 1,457lbs.

The new challenger will be star of the show when it is lifted by forklift truck on to a pallet to compete head-to-head with other heavyweights at the Jubilee Sailing Trust Pumpkin Festival in Southampton. (ANI)
