London, Jan 1 (IANS) Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has expressed his full support for Steven Gerrard who has been charged with assault and affray following an incident in a Southport bar earlier in the week.Gerrard, who has been gaining widespread support and sympathy from not only his team but also from various other quarters, had a long chat with Benitez Wednesday after the manager returned to Melwood Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery for a kidney stone a fortnight ago.

“Steven is our captain and a key player for us, but more than this, I know him as a nice person,” Benitez said.

Benitez said he had also spoken at length to the club lawyer after Steven explained to me what had happened.

Gerrard trained with his teammates Wednesday after a couple of days off for the squad.

“We’ve worked very hard to get into the position we’re in going through to the new year and all of us are determined to keep that progress going.

“We’ll do whatever we can to support Steven in the weeks ahead, but we’re now concentrating on our preparation for the FA Cup game at Preston this weekend.”

Gerrard will attend North Sefton Magistrates’ Court in Southport on Jan 23.
