German engineer abducted in Somalia
January 22nd, 2012 - 5:36 am ICT by IANSMogadishu, Jan 22 (IANS) A foreign national — reportedly a German engineer working for the government — has been abducted in Somalia, according to Xinhua.
The incident took place in the town of Galkacyo, an official said.
Heavily armed gunmen took the engineer as he left the airport in Galkacyo in the states of Galmudug and Puntland.
“The foreigner was taken by the gunmen. The group stopped the man’s vehicle and disarmed his bodyguard before heading away,” an official told Xinhua.
Three aid workers, including two foreigners — an American and a Danish working for a de-mining agency — were kidnapped in October last year.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
Local militias with links to pirates are known to abduct foreigners and demand ransom for their release. Islamist groups have also carried out abductions in the past.
