- Dublin, Oct 17 (DPA) The funeral of former Irish pop singer Stephen Gately, who died last week whilst on holiday in Majorca, took place in Dublin Saturday, with thousands of mourners attending the service, the Irish national broadcaster RTE said.
The service was held in Saint Laurence O’Toole church after which Gately’s body was cremated.
Gately was a member of Boyzone, a highly successful boy-band outfit that had a string of international hits in the 1990s.
The remaining members of the band carried Gately’s coffin to the church Friday evening. Gately died in a hotel room of natural causes, according to coroner reports.
Expected at the funeral alongside Gately’s family were members of similarly successful Irish band Westlife, British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern.
