Sydney, Mar 14 (ANI): Friends of Tosha Thakkar, an Indian-origin student who was sexually assaulted and killed before the murderer dispatched off her body into a canal in a suitcase, described her as “a lovely human being” who did not deserve such “painful” death.

The case was mentioned briefly in a Burwood Local Court today, The Age reports.

Speaking outside the court, one of Thakkar’s friends expressed grief at the untimely death of the accounting student, saying: “We are very upset of course and are just waiting to get justice as soon as possible. She was very nice, the type that got along with everybody and she didn’t deserve this, such a painful death.”

Twenty-four-year-old Thakkar was allegedly killed on Wednesday by Storeman Daniel Stani-Reginald, a 19-year-old Australian man of Sri Lankan descent. Her body was found on Friday by contractors working on routine maintenance of an oil pipeline in a canal running behind Meadowbank Park in north-western Sydney.

Stani-Reginald, who has been reportedly charged with raping and murdering Thakkar, did not appear in the court. He also did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.

He is scheduled to reappear in court on May 9.

Meanwhile, Detective Chief Inspector Pamela Young has said that Australia hoped to return her body to India for a proper Hindu funeral rites. (ANI)
