Brussels, March 22 (Xinhua) Frenchman Alain Bernard set the 100m freestyle world record in the European swimming championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands Friday. The 24-year-old clocked 47.60 seconds in the semi-finals to beat the 47.84 mark set up by Dutch Pieter van den Hoogenband in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

“I knew it would happen, I just didn’t know when,” said Bernard whose previous best was 48.12, “I’ve been working extremely hard for years for this.
