Freed Russian spy plans to return home
July 22nd, 2010 - 5:08 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, July 22 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian scientist Igor Sutyagin, who has been living in Britian and is one of the spies exchanged as part of a Russia-US spy swap deal early this month, said Thursday that he plans to return to his home country.
Sutyagin was sentenced in 2004 in Russia to 15 years in prison for passing information to the US intelligence agency CIA.
“I’m going to return to Obninsk (near Moscow) and fix the rickety porch of our house,” Ekho Moskvy radio quoted the scientist as saying.
“Sooner or later, I don’t know yet, but this will happen,” he added.
Under the spy exchange deal, which took place in Vienna July 9, Russia pardoned and released four prisoners jailed for spying for the US in exchange for its 10 nationals arrested in the US over espionage charges.
