Foul-mouthed man dies after being gaggedJune 9th, 2009 - 8:02 am ICT by IANS
Wellington, June 9 (DPA) Michael James McGrath, 51, died after being gagged with duct tape because he was being “foul-mouthed and disrespectful” during a drinking session with flatmates, New Zealand police said Tuesday.
They said McGrath, a sickness beneficiary who was an alcoholic, was found dead at a house in Motueka, near Nelson, in the South Island, Sunday evening.
Police said he apparently allowed a flatmate to gag him as a joke but they were considering whether to lay criminal charges.
“There doesn’t, on the face of it, appear to be any intention to do anything bad to McGrath but there are certain elements of recklessness involved,” Detective John Nicholls told the New Zealand Press Association.
