Former Nazi officer jailed for life for ordering mass killing in Italy
August 11th, 2009 - 5:12 pm ICT by ANIMunich (Germany), Aug.11 (ANI): A 90-year-old ex-Nazi commander was jailed for life by a court in Munich, Germany, on Tuesday, for ordering the massacre of civilians in an Italian village in 1944.
Josef Scheungraber was convicted and jailed for the deaths of 10 of the 14 residents of Falzano di Cortona in Tuscany.
Before his sentencing, Scheungraber had spent decades in the Bavarian town of Ottobrunn, running a woodworking shop. He also was known to take part in marches that glorified fallen Nazi soldiers.
Scheungraber went on trial last September. The court heard that the mass killing was ordered in retaliation for an attack by Italian partisans that killed two German soldiers. (ANI)
