Former Cop Laurie ‘Bambi’ Bembenek Passes Away At 52

laeyPortland, Nov 22, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Former Milwaukee police officer Laurie ‘Bambi’ Bembenek, who gained wide publicity for her prison escape after being convicted of murder, has passed away. The former cop whose prison escape popularized the slogan ‘Run Bambi Run,’ breathed her last on Saturday at a hospice care in Portland, Oregon, her attorney has revealed. Laurie ‘Bambi’ Bembenek was 52 at the time of her untimely demise.

Earlier last week, it had been reported that the former Milwaukee cop had been placed in a hospice care facility after undergoing liver and kidney failure and was slipping in and out consciousness in a very critical condition. Her longtime attorney Mary Woehrer confirmed the news of her death to the media on Sunday while adding that the decade-long effort undertaken by them to prove her innocence in the murder case would continue despite her demise. The ex-cop was convicted way back in the year 1982 for killing her husband’s former wife Christine Schultz allegedly owing to the alimony that he had to pay her. Although Laurie ‘Bambi’ Bembenek was given a life term in the case, she maintain throughout that she was innocent and was serving her term at the Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Fond du Lac, in the state of Wisconsin.

However, Laurie ‘Bambi’ Bembenek escaped from the prison in 1990 and fled to Canada. Her prison escape attracted huge attention while people rallying in Wisconsin to show their support to the ex-cop. After she returned to the United States two years later, she had an agreement with the prosecutors due to which her conviction was set aside. later, she received a probation period of ten years before pleading no-contest to the murder.
