Food items with high radiation levels found near Japan’s tsunami affected nuke power plant
March 19th, 2011 - 6:18 pm ICT by ANITokyo, Mar 19 (ANI): Milk and spinach have been contaminated in areas near the earthquake-cum-tsunami affected Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, with reports saying that radiation levels in these food items have been found above Japan’s regulated standards.
Although Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano has acknowledged the fact, he insisted that the levels of radiation detected do not immediately pose a risk to human health. He asked consumers to remain calm, the Kyodo news agency reports.
He further said if the milk was consumed for a year at the average rate for Japanese people, the radiation level would be equivalent to a single CT scan, adding that the spinach would be equivalent to a fifth of the level of a CT scan.
The health ministry has said that the milk from the town of Kawamata in Fukushima Prefecture was collected between Wednesday and Friday, while contaminated spinach was collected from six municipalities in Ibaraki Prefecture on Friday.
Meanwhile, Vice Health Minister Kohei Otsuka has said that if the reports turn out to be true, sales of the contaminated products would be stopped.
