drugNew York, Dec 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) New York City’s Columbia University is hitting headlines for all the wrong reasons lately after five students of the prestigious educational institution were taken into custody earlier this week for allegedly carrying out a drug rackets in the fraternity houses of the school. New York officials confirmed on Tuesday that the students were arrested after they were found to be responsible for the suspected drug ring which came to light following an investigation that was conducted on the matter for a period of five months. Apart from the five university students, as many as three drug suppliers has also been detained by the cops, officials have revealed.

A statement that was issued by the New York based Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office stated that the five arrested students have been charged with criminal sale of controlled substance. The arrest comes after the under-cover cops made an estimated $11,000 in illegal drug purchases during the probe that was carried out to bust the issue. In the investigation that was named Operation Ivy League, officials found that the alleged culprits turned fraternity houses into virtual drug supermarkets. While talking about the probe, NYC Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan said that the most surprising part of the entire drug ring was the openness with which it was carried out and the huge variety of drugs that were made available.

Meanwhile, the five arrested students would remain under custody until they can make a bail worth anything between $20,000 to $50,000 in cash. They have also pleaded not guilty to the charges that have been levied against them.
