First round of Austria golf washed outJune 5th, 2008 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANS
Vienna, June 5 (IANS) The opening round of the Bank Austria Golf Open here Thursday was postponed because of incessant rain and there is a strong possibility that the event may be reduced to 54 holes. Both Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa are playing in marquee groups. Jeev is playing with Darren Clarke and Markus Brier, while Jyoti Randhawa is playing with last week’s winner, Scott Strange and Ignacio Garrido.
In a statement released by the European Tour Tournament Director for this week’s event, Miguel Vidaor said: “Round one will now be played on Friday, and round two will now be played on Saturday. With regards to the cut, we will have to make a decision on whether or not we go for four rounds or reduce to 54 holes. If we go for four rounds we will probably have to make the cut for the top 50 players and ties as opposed to the top 65 players and ties.
“If we don’t cut to 50 players and ties, we may have to play three rounds. That decision, whether the cut is going to be altered, will be made before the start of the second round.”
There has been 35 millimetres of rain, but the weather forecast indicated that the rain will ease. With some sunshine play may be possible Friday.
