Fidel Castro blasts revival of US Latin America fleetMay 6th, 2008 - 8:59 pm ICT by admin
Havana, May 6 (IANS) Former Cuban president Fidel Castro has come down heavily on the US for its decision to revive the 4th Fleet saying it was an attempt to intimidate Latin America, EFE news agency reported Tuesday. The US Navy recently announced that it was reviving a force (4th Fleet) that would operate in the waters adjoining Central and South America, the Caribbean Sea and its 12 islands, Mexico and the European territories on the side of Atlantic.
The fleet was created in 1943 to protect the US east coast and Allied shipping from German U-boats and then disbanded in 1950.
In an article published Monday in the official newspaper Granma, Castro reacted strongly to the US Navy’s decision and said the plan was an attempt to intimidate Latin America.
“The decision to re-establish the 4th Fleet was announced in the first week of April, almost a month after Ecuador’s territory was attacked with bombs and US technology,” Fidel said, referring to Washington ally Colombia’s March 1 raid on a clandestine Colombian rebel camp in the neighbouring country.
“What is the stated objective of the 4th Fleet? To combat terrorism and illegal activities such as drug trafficking, and to send a message to Venezuela and the rest of the region,” Fidel said.
“The aircraft carriers and nuclear bombs being used to threaten our countries serve to sow terror and death, but not to fight terrorism or illegal activities,” Castro said.
The Cuban leader also pointed out that US has deployed its 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th fleets in the West Atlantic, East Pacific, Middle East, the Mediterranean, the East Atlantic and West Pacific. “The 4th Fleet was the only one missing for guarding all of the planet’s oceans,” he added.
