Fate of Malay Tamil school hangs in the balance
December 23rd, 2009 - 2:21 pm ICT by ANISeremban (Malaysia), Dec. 23 (ANI): The fate of the Malay Tamil school S J K T Ladang Bukit Bertam, which produced one of the country’s first Harvard graduates, is hanging in the balance.
According to The Star, the school, which has been in existence since the 1920s, could be closed due to zero enrolment for the coming term.
Located at the 500ha Bukit Bertam Estate, Linggi’s only school has been hit with low enrolment for several years.
The school parent-teacher association chairman D. Elangovan said the number of pupils began to dwindle with more Indian families moving out from the estate.
Elangovan said that with foreigners making up most of the workers at the estate, it was pointless to maintain a Tamil school there.
“We hope the authorities will help us relocate to another place where the community needs a Tamil school. The school has teachers, textbooks and satellite TV and all these are being wasted,’ he told The Star. (ANI)
