Fans want Sir Bobby Robson’s statue erected in Newcastle as fitting tribute
August 1st, 2009 - 5:34 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug. 1 (ANI): Fans of late football manager, Sir Bobby Robson, want to honour the hero by erecting his statue in Newcastle.
Football supporters hailed the former England boss, who died on Friday of cancer at the age of 76, as a true legend of the game across the world, Sky News reports.
Newcastle United Supporters’ Club (NUSC) said a statue would be a fitting tribute to a man remembered fondly on Tyneside as Wor Bobby.
NUSC chairman Neil Mitchell said: “A statue of Sir Bobby is something the supporters’ club would back wholeheartedly.
“Speaking personally, I think it’s something which would strike a chord with the majority of Newcastle supporters. Bobby is one of ours; yet he is somebody who cuts across all the boundaries in football - regionally, nationally, and between nations.
“The statue itself would have to be something that would stand for the pride of the man, because he was a man with a lot of pride, and his humour.
“When he was at Ipswich they were able to pick a statue of him from a pose when he had won something.
“Maybe we could have him dancing his jig on the touchline at Italia 90. Whatever it is, it should be inside St James’ Park. That is the true centre, the heartbeat, of the city,” he said.
NUSC member Steve Hastie said: “Sir Bobby epitomised what being a Geordie is all about; pride, dignity and respect to all.
“Our thoughts are with Lady Robson and the family at this sad time.” (ANI)
