Family moves from recession-hit UK to India to start a new life
December 6th, 2009 - 2:16 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, Dec. 6 (ANI): Shrugging off the financial hardships of recession-stricken Britain, a family has moved to India to carve out a new life.
Selling off their wordly possessions in garage sale to start anew in India, the Whittle family is also determined to save the tiger along the way.
According to the Sunday Express, the Whittle family’s epic seven-year Indian adventure has been published as a 128 page e-book called No Worry, Chicken Curry.
The book charts the highs and lows of living and working in India as the Whittles built an eco-tourist lodge from scratch and set up two charities.
Fifty-six-year-old Geoff Whittle, who wrote the book, about his and wife Cherrie’s life-changing decision to quit Britain, says: “My two sons, Jamie and Olly, were 9 and 11-years-old when we decided to leave the UK. It was 1996 and we were in a situation when the country was in a recession and we decided wanted a complete change.”
“The aim was to broaden our horizons and have a total change of scene. At that time my brother - a zoologist - said he was going to India to open an eco-tourist lodge to promote the survival of tigers. We virtually decided over dinner one night that we would join him as a family and run the tourist side of his project because we had backgrounds in marketing and hospitality.”
The Whittles’ decision was met with mixed responses from family and friends. One even to Geoff: “If you want a midlife crisis, why don’t you buy a Porsche and leave the family alone?”
He describes the family’s first impressions of India as “an assault of noise, dirt and poverty” but the culture shock didn’t deter them. The book contains touching recollections of the Whittles’ dealings with jungle flora and fauna, without screaming Swiss Family Robinson. (ANI)
