Explosion in southern Afghanistan kills dozensFebruary 17th, 2008 - 3:49 pm ICT by admin
Kabul, Feb 17 (DPA) An explosion rocked Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan Sunday, leaving scores dead and wounded, a government spokesman said. However, a witness said it was a suicide attack and more than 50 people were killed. “There was an explosion in Kandahar city at 10:00 a.m., that killed dozens and wounded dozens more,” Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said. “We can’t give an exact number, but the number is very high.”
A witness in Kandahar said that it was a suicide attack that killed more than 50 people including a former commander.
Bashary could not confirm whether it was a suicide attack or a remote-controlled explosion.
Kandahar province is the birthplace of the Taliban militants, who are still entrenched in the province six years after being ousted from power by a US-led military invasion.
