Dharamsala, July 6 (IANS) The Tibetan government-in-exile Monday expressed concern over the ongoing repression inside Tibet by the Chinese authorities since it crushed protests in March 2008.
“We (the members of the Kashag or Tibetan parliament-in-exile) have expressed concern over the ongoing repression inside Tibet,” said a statement posted on the official website of the government-in-exile.

“We express our disappointment on the Chinese government’s failure in providing a rational explanation as to whether it agrees or disagrees with the memorandum on genuine autonomy for all Tibetans presented to it last year.

“We urge the Chinese leadership to understand the reality and resolve the Tibet issue in a peaceful manner that would contribute to peace, stability and harmony in both China and Tibet,” the statement said.

“China will not find a more pragmatic leadership than His Holiness (the Dalai Lama) in finding a mutually beneficial solution to the issue of Tibet. If China fails to make use of the opportunity, the present Chinese leadership will be held responsible for their irresponsibility by the generations to come,” speaker of Tibetan parliament-in-exile Penpa Tsering said.

The Chinese government and the Dalai Lama’s envoys have held eight rounds of talks since 2002 to try and find a mutually acceptable solution to the Tibetan issue, with no major breakthrough.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist. But the spiritual leader says he wants to negotiate true autonomy for his homeland from where he fled in 1959 and sought shelter in India with thousands of his followers.

The Tibetan government-in-exile is not recognised by any country in the world.
