Execution of Iranian woman for adultry on hold
August 30th, 2010 - 12:32 am ICT by IANSTehran, Aug 29 (IANS) The Human Rights Headquarters of the Iranian Judiciary said Sunday that the death sentence awarded to a woman for adultery is final, but has been put on hold for the time being.
Given the conclusive evidence in her case file, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted of adultery and complicity in murder. Nevertheless, the stoning to death sentence has not been executed yet as the human rights body is seeking further proceedings, Press TV reported citing the statement.
Under Iranian Islamic Law, adultery is a crime punishable by stoning.
Ashtiani, a mother of two, was found guilty of murdering her husband in collusion with another man, Isa Taheri. She also confessed to having an affair with Taheri.
Taheri was sentenced to 10-year discretionary imprisonment for aiding and abetting the murder of Ebahim Ghaderzadeh, Ashtiani’s former husband.
“The judiciary has adopted special measures to spend more time enforcing the law and observing the legal rights of individuals,” said the statement, adding: “The final results will be announced accordingly.”
