Dubai, Nov 16 (IANS) Films from Europe will be in focus at the ‘Cinema of the World’ segment of the forthcoming Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) to be held Dec 12-19.

Various biopics, dark dramas, and comedy and adventure movies from France, Russia, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Romania will be seen at the 7th edition of the film extravaganza.

“While filmmaking techniques and technology have evolved dramatically, good cinema still has to deliver a powerful narrative, and it should have the ability to touch your heart and set you thinking. The films in the ‘Cinema of the World’ will, I hope, provide just that,” Sheila Whitaker, director of DIFF’s International Programming, said in a press statement.

The European slate for this year will include Oscar winning British director Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours”; Swedish mystery psycho-thriller “Corridor”, originally titled “Isolerad” and Mexican director Alejandro González Inárritu’s “Biutiful”.

Among the films from France are “Copacabana”, “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child” and Sophie Fiennes’ “Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow”.

The German bouquet will have on offer “Suicide Club” and “When We Leave (Die Fremde)”, while Romanian drama “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” will be showcased as an example of the new wave of Romanian cinema.

Russia will serve as the backdrop for two films — Polish drama “Tomorrow Will be Better” and Russian-language Ukrainian film “My Joy” — at the festival.

The ‘Cinema of the World’ programme will also include a selection of cinema from the US. However, the line-up will be announced later.
