January 22nd, 2010 - 8:55 am ICT by IANSBrussels, Jan 22 (IANS) Ministers of the European Union (EU) and secretary of the US Homeland Security have discussed ways to enhance transatlantic aviation security following the recent attempt to blow up an Amsterdam-Detroit flight on Christmas Day.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and the EU justice and home affairs ministers met in Toledo in Spain Thursday, Xinhua reported.
The two sides vowed to share information to prevent terrorist attacks on aircraft. In a joint statement they said: “An international threat demands an international response.”
Aviation security, information sharing, research, among other issues, were discussed.
“We are going to make a greater effort, and work together tirelessly and with more cooperation, as the best guarantee for preventing terrorist attacks,” Spanish Home Affairs Minister Alfredo Rubalcaba said at a press conference after the meeting.
European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot said the commission “is going to speed up its report on (new) technologies and body scanners” to evaluate their effectiveness, possible health effects and compatibility with the right to privacy.
