Brussels, March 16 (IANS) The European Union (EU) Monday said it was willing to address the challenges facing Afghanistan in the context of a wider regional approach, EuAsiaNews reported.
“Fostering stability in Afghanistan is in the interest of all countries in the region and the international community,” the EU said in a statement during a meeting of the 27-member grouping’s foreign ministers here.
The ministers stressed the importance of cooperation by all these countries so as to ensure sustainable development in Afghanistan and the wider region as well as improvement of the bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The statement also underlined the EU’s intentions to play a greater role in resolving the political crisis in Pakistan, ensuring stability and security of the country which is important for bring peace and stemming terrorism in Afghanistan.
“The EU is looking forward to practical results from the upcoming Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA) to be held in Islamabad and welcomes the forthcoming international conference on Afghanistan to be held March 31 in the Netherlands,” the statement said.
The EU ministers said they consider the challenges facing Afghanistan and the broader region require a renewed international engagement.
“The EU will play a major role in this,” they underlined.
